Course Description: This class will provide an introduction to tools and strategies for effective online training. It will provide a contextual background and provide hands on practice using various online tools. By the end of the course, the learner will be able to plan and develop a lesson in an online format using the strategies and techniques learned in this class. The course is composed of 5 sections, one week for each section. They are:
* Week 1 Introduction to PowerPoint
* Week 2 Introduction to Multimedia Elements
* Week 3 Asynchronous Learning and Adult Learning Theory
* Week 4 Using Online Tools for Course Content Creation
* Week 5 Accessibility
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the class, the learner will be able to:
*Demonstrate the ability to create a PowerPoint presentation that is reasonable in length, uses appropriate backgrounds and color schemes, includes appropriate fonts audio/visual elements and is designed to be seamless to the presenter and the viewer.
*Demonstrate the ability to facilitate online discussions, assign and accept written assignments and projects in an online environment and apply the most appropriate synchronous or asynchronous method of conducting a lesson.
*Demonstrate the ability to incorporate appropriate and functional and usable multimedia elements to a selected lesson. These elements include a combination of audio clips, video clips, static graphics and animation along with supporting written materials.
*Demonstrate the ability to incorporate online tools to support other aspects of the class. These include adapting websites, screen capture software, discussion forum sites and Flash conversion software for use in online teaching and learning.
*Demonstrate knowledge of and the correct application of accessibility and universality practices to ensure the maximum educational coverage and to comply with existing employment and disability-rights laws and regulations.
*Correctly determine the appropriate mix of the above tools and strategies for the most effective learner results based on their learners, learning environment and topic.
Textbook & Materials: There are no textbook requirements for this course. Links to reading assignments will be provided as we move through the lessons.
Prerequisites:
*Completion of the face-to-face component of this class.
*Working knowledge of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office interfaces.
Computer Hardware, Software and Connectivity Requirements:
*Access to Windows PC with installed Microsoft office 2003 or later
*Windows XP Operating system or later
*Access to a Broadband Internet connection or faster
*Adobe Reader v9 or later
*Adobe Flash Object Plug in v9 or later
*PC Microphone and webcam
Instructional Methods: This course will be taught using Weebly as our Learning Management System. Communication will be via e-mail and discussion forums. Online chat is an option. E-mail the instructor for chat appointment details. Instruction methods and tools include: audio lectures, video lectures, written lecture transcripts, demonstration videos with corresponding written step-by-step instructions, discussion and written and project assignments, depending on the lesson.
Assessment: To ensure the learning objectives are met, the following assessments will be used depending on the objective:
*Tests will be administered to evaluate understanding of the subject matter. There is no final examination in this course. Each Test will be worth 50 Points
* Written evaluative assignments will be required to assess learners’ ability in evaluating and justifying particular strategies, methods and tools they have chosen or will choose for their particular course. Each evaluative assignment is worth 200 points.
* Demonstration Projects will be required and will comprise a major portion of learners’ final grades. The intent of the projects is to determine whether learners are able to appropriately apply the information, methods, strategies and tools learned and modeled in this course to their own course. Each demonstration assignment is worth 300 points
* Discussion forum participation is a requirement. In addition to posting original discussions, you will we expected to reply substantively to at least two classmates unless otherwise stated for every discussion topic. Quality original posts are worth 20 points, quality responses are worth 10 points.
* No extra credit assignments are offered for this course.
The following Grading Scale will be used in this course:
A 90%-100% of possible points Excellent
B 80%-89% of possible points Good
C 70%-79% of possible points Solidly Adequate
D 60%-69% of possible points Barely Adequate
F 50%-59% of possible points Not Adequate
All tests, projects and assignments are due each Friday at 5:00 PST
